Worked example: apply a discount
An item costs 80 before a 15% discount.
Inputs and process
- 1Calculate 15% of 80: 0.15 × 80 = 12
- 2Subtract the discount from the original price: 80 − 12
- 3Use the original price as the base
Result
The discount is 12 and the price after the discount is 68.
A 15% discount does not mean the final price is 15. It means 15 out of every 100 units of the original base is removed.
