Percentage formulas in context
Most percentage mistakes come from using the wrong denominator. “15% of 80,” “12 is what percent of 80?” and “80 increased to 92” contain similar numbers but answer different questions.
An item costs 80 before a 15% discount.
Result
The discount is 12 and the price after the discount is 68.
A 15% discount does not mean the final price is 15. It means 15 out of every 100 units of the original base is removed.
For a change from 80 to 100, subtract first and divide by the original 80: (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. Reversing the comparison gives −20%, because the base becomes 100.
Percentage points and percent change are different. Moving from 20% to 25% is an increase of 5 percentage points, but a 25% relative increase from the original 20%.
Separate the discount amount from the final price and verify the original base.
