Image optimization workflow

Reduce dimensions before sacrificing visible quality

Image size depends on pixel dimensions, format, scene detail and encoder settings. A large camera photo displayed at 1200 pixels wide usually wastes more bytes through unused dimensions than through a slightly conservative quality setting.

Worked example: a product photo for a web article

The source is a 4032 × 3024 JPEG that will never display wider than 1200 pixels in the article layout.

Result

Choose the smallest output that remains visually clean in the real layout, then record the actual byte reduction shown by the tool.

There is no universal quality number or guaranteed file size. A detailed photograph, flat illustration and screenshot can produce very different results with identical settings.

How to interpret size and quality

A large percentage reduction is useful only when the output still supports its purpose. Check legibility, banding, block artifacts, transparency and color edges rather than judging the number alone.

JPEG and lossy WebP are usually appropriate for photographs. PNG or lossless WebP can be safer for screenshots, diagrams and artwork with sharp text. Preserve an original outside the browser session.
